What is the structure of hair?

Hair is an amazing material that, although biologically dead, has a life of its own. To understand it, it is necessary to know its structure. The hair is housed in a depression in the skin called the hair follicle, and is divided into two parts:

Root

In the root there is a great deal of metabolic and mitotic activity. The root ends in a bulb in whose central hollow is the dermal papilla that feeds the hair. When the blood circulation is active the hair growth is rapidThe opposite is the case, being slow in the opposite case.

Stem

The stem has 3 subparts:
Cuticle: It occupies 9% of the total hair surface and is a protective layer resistant to physical and chemical forces that could quickly damage hair fibers as they emerge from the skin. Its integrity provides shine to the hair and ease of gliding when brushing.
Cortex: It constitutes the middle layer of the hair shaft, occupies 70% of the total hair surface, and is responsible for the mechanical properties of the hair.
Spinal cord: It represents 21% of the hair surface. It is located in the central part and is composed of rounded horny cells, with no nucleus and little pigmentation.

The most abundant protein is keratin which accounts for 85% to 90% of the total hair weight.
